Weekly insights from an Entreprenuer: To spend one year as a tiger is better than to live forever as sheep

My name is Brian Ma and I started Bma’s Tiger Blog in order to document and explore the fascinating nuances of life, passion, and following your dreams.  Everyone of us have had dreams – things that tug at our hearts, tell us our purpose, inspire us, and give us hope.  Over time, as we conform to the things of the ‘real world’, we’ve lost them, or they’ve become so dim that they no longer speak with the ferocity and fire they used to.

I graduated early from the University of Washington with a Computer Science/Electrical Engineering double degree and worked for big companies like Microsoft and Intel.  Curious about startup life, I left the comforts of the large corporations and ended up at Zillow, doing Program Management with a very small, tight-knit team.  That was before they had a product.  After 2.5 years there, when Zillow’s growth and headcount had erupted, I found my calling to be back at where my heart originally was – at the startup.  I left and founded, a recruiting startup, in order to once again walk the path less traveled.

2 years into Eggsprout, realizing the lack of data was really hindering us we decided on a gigantic pivot – to shopping – where data is beyond abundant.  Long story short, what was originally a small team and neat idea turned into  $8.5 million dollars and 25+ people later, we are now on a tear to redefine and reinvent shopping.  An adventure that daily inspires, delights, and challenges me.

I hope to accomplish two things with this blog:

  1. To relight my fire in pursuit of dreams once forgotten
  2. To enlighten and share my experiences with aspiring and current entrepreneurs
